Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR)

The US Fish & Wildlife Service (USFWS) has banned camelids (specifically llamas and alpacas) from the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR). USFWS made the claim that llamas and alpacas carry diseases and parasites to the native wildlife especially Dall’s sheep, which are free of domestic livestock diseases and are believed to have low immunity to such diseases.

USFWS made several fundamental scientific errors in making their determination with regard to camelids being disease vectors; The studies cited by USFWS were based on limited population surveys, were not published in scientific journals, and were not peer-reviewed.

Prohibiting the use of llamas based on unsound scientific evidence sets a dangerous precedent which could see llamas banned from public lands and parks nationwide.
